Material Properties & Angle of Repose

Material Loose Density (lb/cy) Angle of Repose Compaction Factor
Gravel, dry 2,600 - 2,800 35° - 40° 1.10 - 1.15
Sand, dry 2,500 - 2,700 32° - 36° 1.05 - 1.10
Crushed stone 2,700 - 3,000 38° - 45° 1.15 - 1.20
Topsoil 2,000 - 2,400 30° - 35° 1.10 - 1.25
Clay, dry 2,700 - 3,000 25° - 35° 1.25 - 1.35
Limestone, crushed 3,000 - 3,400 38° - 42° 1.10 - 1.15

Stockpile Measurement Tips

  • Measure from the natural base, not counting any material spread beyond the pile
  • For irregular piles, take multiple cross sections
  • Wet material will have a steeper angle than dry
  • Conveyor-fed piles may exceed natural angle of repose
  • Account for segregation in mixed materials
  • Truck loads: standard tandem = ~12 cy, tri-axle = ~15-18 cy
